For Mathilde Chagnon, receiving the Thelma Cardwell Scholarship in 2023 created meaningful opportunities to deepen her work and expand her professional network. Mathilde will be graduating with her Master’s in Occupational Therapy at the Université de Sherbrooke this month.
“The scholarship provided both practical support and a sense of recognition that motivated me to continue advocating for inclusive academic environments.”
Through a research-action approach, Mathilde is exploring how post secondary institutions can redesign environments, policies, and teaching practices to foster a sense of belonging for neurodivergent learners, bridging clinical insight with systemic change.
The impact of the Thelma Cardwell Scholarship
“Receiving this scholarship significantly supported my academic and professional journey in several ways. First, it helped reduce financial stress, allowing me to dedicate more time and energy to my master’s research on the inclusion of neurodivergent students in higher education. It also enabled me to attend key conferences and workshops, where I could share findings from my research and connect with other scholars and practitioners working on accessibility and equity in education.”
Advice for future COTF scholarship applicants
When asked what she would say to other students considering applying for COTF funding, Mathilde encourages them to take the leap:
“Absolutely go for it! This scholarship is more than just financial support — it’s an investment in your potential and your vision.”
Life outside of occupational therapy
Outside of her studies, Mathilde finds herself spending time in nature. She enjoys hiking, cycling, and exploring quiet trails that allow her time to recharge and reflect. Mathilde is also an avid reader, drawn to books on neurodiversity, education, and social justice. When time allows, she participates in community initiatives focused on inclusion and accessibility.
